How to save tabs in Microsoft Edge
Updated October 20, 2026
To save all your open tabs in Edge, press Ctrl Shift D (Cmd Shift D on Mac) and Edge adds every tab to a new favorites folder. For a place built for coming back to, use Collections, or a tab shelf extension that saves and closes the tabs in one step.
Four ways, at a glance
1. Add all tabs to favorites
Press Ctrl+Shift+D, name the folder, and save. Every open tab goes into it. You can then close the window. Favorites sync with your Microsoft account, and the tabs stay saved as long as you keep the folder. The catch: folders pile up, and a favorites folder is easy to forget about.
2. Collections
Collections is Edge's built-in way to gather pages. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+Y, start a new collection, and use Add current page, or drag a tab in. A collection can hold notes and images next to the pages. It's good for a research project you'll return to on purpose. It's more work than a quick "put these away", because you add pages yourself.
3. Restore tabs on startup
Open Settings, choose Start, home, and new tabs, and under When Edge starts select Open tabs from the previous session. Edge then reopens what you had open last time. This saves your place across a restart. It doesn't make anything smaller: the tabs are all still open, and the strip keeps filling up.
4. Use a tab shelf
A tab shelf extension closes the tabs you aren't using and keeps them in a list on your computer. Tab Shelf works in Edge and installs from the Chrome Web Store. Edge asks you to allow extensions from other stores the first time. Click Allow.
- Press
Alt+Shift+S, then Enter. Your current tab and your last five active tabs stay open, along with pinned tabs and anything playing sound. - Everything else goes to your shelf, grouped by when you cleaned and by site.
- Press
Alt+Shift+Fto open the shelf. Search by title or address, and click a tab to open it again.
Try it below on sample tabs.
The shelf is stored in your browser on your computer and doesn't sync to other devices. If you switch computers, use Export on the shelf page and Import on the new one. Tab Shelf is free. Pro ($4.99 once) reopens tabs at your scroll position or video time and can shelve idle tabs for you.
